Artificial intelligence is making significant strides in replacing traditional voice agents. Companies are now focusing on creating synthetic human-like voices to enhance user experiences. Truecaller, a well-known caller ID service, is at the forefront of this innovation. The company recently announced that it would enable customers to use its AI-powered Assistant to answer phone calls using their own voices.
This new feature is a result of Truecaller’s collaboration with Microsoft. The Swedish company is utilizing Microsoft’s Personal Voice technology, which was introduced in November as part of Azure AI Speech. This partnership allows Truecaller to offer a more personalized experience to its users.
Creating a Digital Version of Your Voice
Truecaller’s Assistant, available to subscribers, can now mimic users’ voices to greet and respond to callers. Users need to record a short script in their own voice, giving their consent for the creation of a digital copy. Once set up, the Assistant can handle various tasks such as answering calls, screening unknown numbers, taking messages, responding on behalf of the user, or even recording calls for later review.
Typically, Truecaller’s Assistant allows users to customize the greeting template for callers. However, when using the personal voice feature, this customization is limited. Truecaller has designed this restriction to ensure that callers are aware they are hearing a digital version of the user’s voice. Despite this limitation, users can still customize the follow-up responses to suit their preferences.
Microsoft’s Personal Voice technology, part of Azure AI Speech, adds watermarks to the synthetic audio it generates. This feature ensures that a detector tool can identify the audio as synthetic, enhancing security and transparency.
Statements from Truecaller
“We firmly believe that the personal voice feature will revolutionize the way our users manage their calls and elevate their overall experience with Truecaller Assistant. We look forward to further exploring the potential of AI-powered voice technologies in partnership with Microsoft and delivering even more innovative solutions to our global user base,” said Raphael Mimoun, product director and general manager, Truecaller Israel.
The personal voice feature on Truecaller’s Assistant will begin rolling out in the next few weeks. It will first be available to public beta users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Sweden, and Chile. Eventually, it will be accessible to all users in these regions.
By integrating Microsoft’s cutting-edge AI technology, Truecaller aims to offer a more personalized and efficient call management experience to its users worldwide.
