Spotify has New Feature AI that Builds Playlists From Text

Following last year’s experimentation with AI playlist generation in its DJ feature, Spotify is rolling out a beta tool that enables users to craft curated tracklists based on text descriptions. The new AI Playlist beta is currently available to Spotify Premium subscribers on mobile devices in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Android and iOS users in these regions can access the AI Playlist generator by navigating to “Your Library” and tapping the “+” button at the top-right corner of the page. After selecting the AI Playlist option from the drop-down menu, users can input a prompt, such as “music to read to on a cold, rainy day,” to receive a playlist of 30 songs that match the specified vibe. Users can utilize additional prompts, such as “more sad music,” to refine the results until they are satisfied, then save the playlist by tapping “create” at the top right.

Spotify emphasizes that users can create better playlists by using prompts that include “a combination of genres, moods, artists, or decades,” and that they can reference various elements like places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis. The platform plans to continue refining its generative playlist feature in the coming months.

What does this mean for Spotify Users?

While users have the option to curate their playlists further by adding prompts or removing specific tracks, there are certain limitations to be aware of. For instance, AI Playlists cannot generate results for non-music-related prompts such as current events or specific brands, and measures are in place to prevent offensive prompts.

Initial user experiences with the new feature have been positive, as it provides a quicker alternative to manually building playlists and serves as a useful music discovery tool for users seeking tunes that fit a specific aesthetic. Compared to Spotify’s AI DJ feature, which generates custom playlists based on users’ listening history with limited curation options, the AI Playlist feature offers enhanced functionality.

However, Spotify’s introduction of this new feature may lead to potential price increases expected later this year. Currently, Premium subscriptions start at $5.99 per month for students or $10.99 for individuals. The availability of the beta in other regions remains unclear, but Spotify will provide updates as the feature progresses.
