At Samsung’s Unpacked 2024 event, the company unveiled the latest iterations of its foldable phones: the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. These devices are thinner, lighter, and feature enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Alongside these upgrades, Samsung has increased the starting prices to $1,900 for the Fold and $1,100 for the Flip.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 come with notable design improvements. The Fold 6 boasts a much-anticipated update to its front display aspect ratio, making it more user-friendly. Both models are lighter and slimmer than their predecessors, reflecting Samsung’s commitment to continuous design refinement.
Powering these new models is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the same chipset found in the Galaxy S24. This inclusion underscores Samsung’s focus on integrating cutting-edge hardware to support advanced AI features.
AI-Centric Features
Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of the new Galaxy devices, as highlighted in the announcement, which mentions AI capabilities 25 times. This focus on AI began with the Galaxy S24 and has been a major theme throughout the year, with significant contributions from Google, Apple, and Microsoft in the mobile AI space.
The integration of Google’s generative AI app, Gemini, is a standout feature. Gemini allows users to interact with AI for tasks such as writing, learning, and planning by simply swiping the screen corner or using voice commands. It is integrated with Google apps, enabling seamless organization of travel itineraries, real-time flight and hotel booking information, and detailed exploration of landmarks via Google Maps. Additionally, Gemini can provide context-specific information while multitasking on the Z Fold 6’s large screen.
Galaxy AI’s initial applications focused on imaging enhancements. With the new releases, Samsung has expanded AI capabilities to include advanced assistance features in the Notes app, such as transcription, translation, and summarization of voice recordings. These features align with similar advancements from Google and Apple.
Moreover, the Notes app has improved PDF translation capabilities, and the Samsung Keyboard now includes a predictive text function. A particularly notable feature is Galaxy AI’s ability to emulate the user’s writing style for social media posts by analyzing previous content.
Market Dynamics and Competitive Response
The shift in the Z Flip 6’s internal aspect ratio to a squarer format demonstrates Samsung’s responsiveness to consumer demand. This change follows the trend set by foldables from Google and OnePlus/Oppo, which have shown that these devices need not be awkwardly tall. Despite its dominance in the foldables market, Samsung continues to adapt to market forces, recognizing that this category is still evolving and far from perfected.
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 are available for preorder and will start shipping on July 24.
Samsung’s latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, showcase significant advancements in design and AI capabilities. With enhanced AI features, deeper integration with Google Gemini, and a focus on user-friendly design, these devices set a new standard in the foldables market. As Samsung continues to innovate and respond to consumer demands, it remains a formidable player in the rapidly evolving landscape of mobile technology.
