Meta Introduces Its Latest Custom AI Chip in a Race to Keep Up

Meta, formerly Facebook, is aggressively investing in its generative AI capabilities, pouring billions into its own AI initiatives. While a significant portion of this investment is directed towards recruiting AI researchers, a substantial chunk is dedicated to hardware development, particularly in the realm of chips tailored for Meta’s AI models.

Meta has unveiled its latest achievement in chip development, the “next-gen” Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA), succeeding last year’s MTIA v1. This new chip optimizes the running of models, including those utilized for ranking and recommending display ads across Meta’s platforms like Facebook.

Key Features and Performance Improvements

The next-gen MTIA, compared to its predecessor MTIA v1, utilizes a smaller 5nm process and features a larger design with more processing cores. Despite consuming more power, the next-gen MTIA offers significant enhancements, including increased internal memory and higher clock speeds, resulting in up to 3x better performance.

Meta’s hardware strategy diverges from conventional approaches in several aspects. Unlike some competitors, Meta is not currently utilizing the next-gen MTIA for generative AI training workloads. Instead, it plans to complement GPUs rather than replace them for running or training models.

Challenges and Competition in the AI Hardware Space

Meta faces pressure to streamline costs, with substantial investments in GPUs for generative AI models. Meanwhile, competitors like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are advancing rapidly in AI hardware development, presenting a formidable challenge to Meta’s ambitions.

Despite notable progress in chip development, Meta acknowledges the need to accelerate its pace to match competitors’ advancements. While the timeline for developing the next-gen MTIA is commendable, Meta still has ground to cover to achieve greater independence from third-party GPUs and stay competitive in the AI hardware landscape.
