Humane on the Market After AI Pin’s Disappointing Debut

Humane, the company behind the AI Pin wearable computer, is actively looking for a buyer after the device’s lackluster launch. Bloomberg reports that the startup, founded by former Apple veterans Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, is hoping to sell for a price between $750 million and $1 billion.

Priced at $699, the AI Pin has been criticized for its sluggish performance and user experience that fails to live up to the promised always-on, wearable AI assistant. Marketed as a tool to help users stay present and reduce reliance on smartphones, it hasn’t delivered as expected.

CosmOS and Technological Hiccups

Humane developed its own operating system, CosmOS, for the AI Pin. This OS connects to various AI models to provide answers to voice commands and analyze visual input from the built-in camera. The device even features a laser “display” that projects information onto the user’s palm. However, the AI Pin requires a monthly subscription to stay functional.

Despite its innovative approach, the AI Pin’s software is underdeveloped and inconsistent. Users have reported issues with battery life and overheating. Humane has however promised firmware updates and recently incorporated OpenAI’s GPT-4o model to boost the device’s capabilities.

Financial Background and Investor Involvement

The company has secured $230 million in funding from investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman is also rumored to be developing a new AI product with renowned Apple designer Jony Ive. Humane was valued at $850 million in 2023, prior to the negative feedback on its first product.

Market Challenges and Potential Buyers

Finding a buyer at the desired price may be difficult, given the AI Pin’s poor reception. While tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are heavily investing in AI, it’s uncertain how much Humane’s technology would enhance their existing projects.

In summary, Humane’s effort to sell the company follows the AI Pin’s failure to impress the market. As the startup continues to refine its product, it remains to be seen whether it will find a buyer in the competitive AI industry.
