To safeguard celebrities’ digital identities in Hollywood, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a prominent entertainment and sports talent agency, is leading the charge in AI protection services. CAA has responded to the growing concern of unauthorized use of celebrities’ digital likenesses by introducing “theCAAvault,” a virtual media storage system designed to cater to A-list talent. This innovative platform allows actors, athletes, comedians, directors, musicians, and others to securely store their digital assets, including names, images, digital scans, and voice recordings. By utilizing scanning technology, CAA enables these talents to record their bodies, faces, movements, and voices, creating AI clones for enhanced protection.
In a strategic partnership, CAA has joined forces with AI technology company Veritone to deliver a comprehensive digital asset management solution.
Addressing the Issue of Deepfake Scams
The announcement of this initiative comes in the wake of a surge in AI deepfake incidents involving celebrities. Notably, actor Tom Hanks, a client of CAA, recently encountered an AI scam misusing his likeness without consent.
The creation of digital clones necessitates the collection of significant personal data, raising valid privacy concerns. However, CAA’s solution ensures clients’ data security by providing a secure personal hub within the CAAvault, accessible only to authorized users.
According to Alexandra Shannon, CAA’s head of strategic development, theCAAvault empowers clients to dictate the consent-based use of their AI clones. This innovative approach furthermore aims to set precedents for ethical AI utilization in the industry.
Ensuring Fair Compensation
Moreover, the vault ensures that actors and talent receive fair compensation when companies utilize their digital likenesses.
The use of AI cloning has sparked debates within Hollywood, with concerns ranging from potential job displacement to ethical considerations regarding deceased celebrities. However, CAA emphasizes a consent and permission-based approach to all AI applications.
While only a select few clients currently utilize the vault, CAA plans to expand accessibility in the future. Although participation entails a fee, CAA aims to make the service more accessible over time.
