Higgsfield, a new player in the field of generative AI, emerged in response to OpenAI’s revelation of Sora, a model that converts scene descriptions into original videos without requiring cameras or film crews. While Sora garnered significant attention, its access has remained limited, primarily catering to well-funded creatives like Hollywood directors, leaving hobbyists and small-scale marketers on the sidelines.
The Emergence of Higgsfield AI: Filling a Niche in Personalized Video Creation
Recognizing an untapped market opportunity, Alex Mashrabov, former head of generative AI at Snap, launched Higgsfield AI, an innovative platform for video creation and editing tailored for more personalized applications.
Powered by a proprietary text-to-video model, Higgsfield’s inaugural app, Diffuse, empowers users to generate videos from scratch or create clips featuring a user’s selfie.
“Our target audience spans all types of creators,” Mashrabov told TechCrunch. “From regular users seeking to craft fun content with friends, to social content creators exploring new formats, to social media marketers aiming to elevate their brand presence.”
Mashrabov’s journey to Snap included his previous startup, AI Factory, which Snap acquired in 2020 for $166 million. During his tenure at Snap, Mashrabov contributed to the development of products like AR effects and filters for Snapchat, including Cameos and the controversial MyAI chatbot.
Higgsfield, co-founded by Mashrabov and Yerzat Dulat, an AI researcher specializing in generative video, offers a curated selection of pre-generated clips, an upload tool for reference media, and a prompt editor for users to describe desired characters, actions, and scenes. With Diffuse, users can seamlessly integrate themselves into AI-generated scenes or mimic actions captured in other videos.
“Our model boasts highly realistic movements and expressions,” Mashrabov explained. “We’re pioneering ‘world models’ for consumers, enabling best-in-class video generation and editing with superior control.”
Advancing Toward a Mobile-Centric Future: Higgsfield’s Unique Approach to Social Media Content Creation
While Higgsfield competes with established players like Runway and Haiper in the generative video space, Mashrabov believes Diffuse’s mobile-first, social-centric approach sets it apart.
“By prioritizing iOS and Android apps over desktop workflows, we empower creators to craft compelling social media content anytime, anywhere,” Mashrabov emphasized.
Operating with efficiency, Higgsfield’s generative models were developed by a 16-person team in under nine months, utilizing a cluster of 32 GPUs. Despite OpenAI’s extensive GPU usage, Higgsfield has only raised $8 million to date, primarily from a recent seed funding round led by Menlo Ventures.
To maintain a competitive edge, Higgsfield plans to enhance its video editor, allowing users to modify characters and objects, while training more potent video generation models tailored for social media applications. Mashrabov envisions social media, particularly social media marketing, as Higgsfield’s primary revenue stream.
Although Diffuse is presently free, Mashrabov anticipates introducing premium features or subscription models for marketers or large-scale campaigns in the future.
While generative AI presents significant opportunities, it also poses challenges, including the potential misuse of copyrighted content and concerns about data privacy.
Mashrabov didn’t disclose Higgsfield’s data sources but assured that user data can be deleted upon request. Additionally, Higgsfield employs a combination of automated and manual moderation to address potential abuse.
As Higgsfield navigates the complex landscape of generative AI, its success hinges on its ability to balance innovation with responsible usage in an evolving digital landscape.
