Google has unveiled plans to introduce a range of on-device AI-powered functionalities for the upcoming Pixel 8, including recording summaries and smart replies. These innovations, leveraging Gemini Nano, a compact model released by Google last year, are tailored to operate directly on devices.
The forthcoming Pixel feature drop will debut a developer preview of two notable features: Summarizer in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard. Initially announced during the Pixel 8 launch event last October, these capabilities were previously exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24.
Explaining their approach, the company highlighted the importance of adapting large language models to varying device memory specifications to ensure consistent user experiences. Google highlighted that they specifically conducted extensive testing and validation on the Pixel 8. By extending access to Gemini Nano through this developer preview, Google aims to foster a broader community engagement, inviting enthusiasts and developers to provide feedback and drive further innovation.
Traditionally, Google has predominantly focused on AI-powered functionalities that rely on cloud computing, even when targeting mobile devices. However, this shift towards on-device AI marks a strategic evolution in Google’s approach to integrating AI capabilities directly into its hardware offerings.
Earlier this year, Google introduced the “Circle to Search” feature for select Pixel and Samsung devices, expanding its accessibility to a broader range of compatible devices. This week, Google announced plans to further extend the availability of this feature to additional Pixel and Samsung smartphones, as well as select tablets. Furthermore, Google plans to update the Circle to Search feature, adding support for instant translation of on-screen content, improving its utility for users.
