Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, is unveiling a novel initiative aimed at supporting nonprofits engaged in developing technology powered by generative AI.

Dubbed Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI, this groundbreaking program will be underpinned by a $20 million grant fund, initially involving 21 nonprofits. Among the pioneering participants are Quill.org, an organization dedicated to harnessing AI to enhance student writing feedback tools, and the World Bank, which is spearheading the development of a generative AI application to enhance accessibility to development research.

Empowering Nonprofits with Generative AI Solutions

Beyond financial support, the nonprofits enrolled in this intensive six-month accelerator program will benefit from a comprehensive package that includes technical training, workshops, mentorship, and guidance from an assigned “AI coach.” Moreover, through Google.org’s fellowship initiative, dedicated teams of Google employees will collaborate with three of the nonprofits—Tarjimly, Benefits Data Trust, and mRelief—on a full-time basis for up to six months to aid in the launch of their proposed generative AI solutions.

Tarjimly’s mission is to utilize AI to facilitate language translation for refugees, while Benefits Data Trust seeks to harness AI to develop assistants that assist caseworkers in aiding low-income individuals in enrolling for public benefits. Similarly, mRelief is in the process of crafting a tool to streamline the application process for U.S. SNAP benefits.

Annie Lewin, Director of Global Advocacy at Google.org, underscored the transformative potential of generative AI in bolstering the productivity, creativity, and effectiveness of social impact endeavors. She highlighted findings from Google.org funding recipients, revealing that AI adoption enabled them to achieve their objectives in significantly reduced timeframes and at a fraction of the cost.

Despite the promising outlook, nonprofits face formidable barriers in harnessing the potential of AI technologies. Cost constraints, resource limitations, and time pressures are among the primary hurdles hindering nonprofits from developing their AI solutions or embracing existing AI products.

According to a survey conducted by PwrdBy, a staggering 73% of nonprofits believe that AI innovation aligns with their organizational missions, with 75% acknowledging the transformative impact of AI in streamlining operations. Nonetheless, the adoption of AI technologies remains impeded by a lack of tools, awareness, training, and funding.

The Rise of Ethical AI Initiatives in Nonprofit Sector

Encouragingly, there has been a notable uptick in the emergence of nonprofit startups focusing on AI initiatives. Nonprofit accelerator Fast Forward reported a significant increase in the number of AI-centric applicants for its latest cohort, reflecting a burgeoning interest in leveraging AI for social impact. Similarly, a multitude of nonprofit organizations worldwide actively explore ethical AI approaches, exemplifying initiatives such as AlgorithmWatch, JoyEducation, and Earth05.
