Andrej Karpathy, renowned for his work with Tesla and OpenAI, is now venturing into education with the launch of Eureka Labs, an “AI native” education platform. The San Francisco-based startup, registered as an LLC in Delaware, aims to integrate AI teaching assistants into educational settings to enhance learning experiences.
Eureka Labs aspires to revolutionize education by leveraging generative AI to create AI teaching assistants. These AI personalities will support human teachers, facilitating a more interactive and personalized learning environment. According to Karpathy, the goal is to enable “anyone to learn anything,” with AI assistants complementing traditional teaching methods.
Despite its ambitious AI goals, Eureka Labs is starting with a more conventional approach. The first product will be an AI course named LLM101n, an undergraduate-level class designed to help students train their AI models. This course serves as a precursor to the more advanced AI teaching assistants that Eureka Labs aims to develop. The course materials will be available online, offering both digital and physical cohorts.
AI Course Details
A GitHub repository details the AI course, LLM101n, describing it as a guide to building a “Storyteller AI Large Language Model (LLM).” The course promises to teach students how to create, refine, and illustrate stories using AI, culminating in a functioning web app similar to ChatGPT. The curriculum covers fundamental concepts in Python, C, and CUDA, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of AI development.
Currently, the integration of AI teaching assistants into classrooms remains untested. While studies, such as one from Georgia State University, suggest that AI assistants can improve student grades, Eureka Labs has yet to implement and evaluate its system. Additionally, there are uncertainties regarding the startup’s funding, team composition, and business model. The LLC filing with California’s Secretary of State is signed solely by Karpathy, and there have been no public filings related to investor backing.
Karpathy’s passion for AI and education spans over two decades. Before co-founding OpenAI and leading Tesla’s AI team, he taught deep learning for computer vision at Stanford University. His work at Tesla included leading the computer vision team for Tesla Autopilot, an advanced driving assistance system. After leaving Tesla in 2022, Karpathy returned to OpenAI to work on ChatGPT before stepping down in February.

Karpathy remains committed to education through his online course, Neural Networks: Zero to Hero, which teaches students to build neural networks from scratch. He also regularly posts lectures on LLMs and AI on his YouTube channel, continuing to share his expertise with a broader audience.
