During an interview on Monday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made bold predictions, suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) surpassing human intelligence could happen as soon as next year or by 2026. Despite facing multiple technology glitches in X spaces, Musk discussed various topics, including AI’s constraints due to electricity availability.
Speaking with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norway’s wealth fund, Musk provided insights into the progress of Grok, an AI chatbot developed by his xAI startup. He mentioned that they expect to train the next version of Grok by May but highlighted challenges due to a shortage of advanced chips.
Musk, also a co-founder of OpenAI, expressed concerns about the deviation of OpenAI from its original mission. He founded xAI last year as a challenger to OpenAI, which he has sued for allegedly prioritizing profit over humanity’s betterment through AI development.
Will AI indeed surpass human intelligence?
The Tesla CEO revealed that training the Grok 2 model required around 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, with future versions demanding even more chips, estimating up to 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips. He emphasized that, besides chip shortages, electricity supply would become a critical factor in AI development within the next couple of years.
Elon Musk expressed his admiration for the Chinese automakers, considering them to be the most competitive globally in the automotive industry. Additionally, he cautioned that global competitors could be outperformed by their Chinese counterparts unless trade restrictions are put in place.
Addressing recent labour issues, Musk mentioned a union strike in Sweden against Tesla, indicating that the situation had improved. Discussions had taken place between Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, a major Tesla shareholder, and the EV company’s leadership regarding recent developments.
Musk’s remarks shed light on the landscape of AI development and the challenges faced by both the technology and automotive industries.
