Deezer Introduces AI Playlist Generator to Compete with Spotify and Amazon Music

Deezer, the popular music streaming app, has joined the race to enhance user experience through artificial intelligence. On Monday, the company announced the launch of its new “Playlist with AI” feature, allowing a select number of paid users to create custom playlists using text prompts.

This move comes as Spotify and Amazon Music have already begun testing personalized AI playlist generators with their users. YouTube is also reportedly testing a similar AI radio feature. With Deezer’s entry into the AI playlist space, the competition among music streaming services is heating up.

Deezer is initially rolling out the “Playlist with AI” feature to 5% of its paying subscribers. Users can create new playlists by providing written prompts that describe various factors such as moods, genres, decades, and activities. For example, users could request an early 2000s pop-rock playlist for workouts or a 2010s feel-good playlist for studying.

Content Moderation

Before generating a playlist, Deezer ensures that the prompts do not include hate speech, dangerous content, sexually explicit material, or harassment. This content moderation step is crucial for maintaining a positive user experience and adhering to community guidelines.

“We’re excited to bring this AI-powered feature to Deezer users around the world,” said Alexandra Leloup, VP of Product at Deezer, in a press release. “Whether you need the perfect soundtrack for a workout, a romantic evening, or a nostalgic trip down memory lane, our Playlist with AI feature will curate a new musical experience within a matter of seconds and offers endless possibilities to easily discover new music.”

AI Integration and Technology

The “Playlist with AI” feature is powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 AI model. Deezer has been leveraging AI to enhance recommendations and the overall user experience for its listeners. The app’s signature feature, Flow, uses AI to create mixes based on moods and genres. Additionally, Deezer’s Shazam-like Song Catcher feature employs AI to help users identify song titles.

While Deezer has not yet specified when the “Playlist with AI” beta will be more broadly available, the current rollout to a select group of users marks a significant step in its ongoing efforts to integrate AI technology into its platform.

Deezer’s introduction of the “Playlist with AI” feature demonstrates its commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving music streaming industry. By leveraging advanced AI technology, Deezer aims to provide its users with personalized and engaging musical experiences, keeping pace with industry giants like Spotify and Amazon Music.
