The emergence of AI-powered tools like OpenAI’s Whisper has revolutionized note-taking apps, making transcription a core feature. Apps such as AudioPen, Cleft Notes, and TalkNotes have quickly gained popularity, but most offer limited functionality. However, a new contender has entered the arena: Voicenotes, developed by the founders of Buy Me a Coffee.
Jijo Sunny and his wife Aleesha conceived Voicenotes after experiencing a personal tragedy—a miscarriage. During medical consultations, they relied heavily on voice notes to capture crucial information from healthcare professionals. Motivated by their own need for a reliable transcription tool, they embarked on building Voicenotes with Jijo’s brother and Buy Me a Coffee co-founder, Joseph Sunny.
App Features
Voicenotes sets itself apart by offering an AI assistant that allows users to query past notes. The app enables users to record voice notes, tag them, and edit them effortlessly. It employs AI to generate titles, summaries, and main points of the notes. Additionally, users can leverage AI to reformat notes into various formats, including blog posts, tweets, to-do lists, and emails.
The “Ask my AI” feature enables verbal searches within notes, facilitating quick retrieval of information. Notably, Voicenotes is available as a web app and on both iOS and Android platforms, providing users with flexibility and accessibility.
While Voicenotes introduces innovative features, it faces stiff competition from established players like Cleft Notes and AudioPen. Cleft Notes boasts on-device transcription for enhanced privacy, while AudioPen offers extensive formatting options. Additionally, native apps like Google Recorder and Samsung’s Transcribe Assist pose a threat, especially if they expand to more devices.
The prospect of Apple integrating transcription into its voice memo app poses a significant risk to third-party note-taking apps. However, Voicenotes aims to differentiate itself through its elegant design, advanced AI models, and the unique “Ask My AI” feature.
Monetization and Future Plans
Voicenotes offers a free version with the option to upgrade to a premium subscription for advanced AI models and features. A lifetime access plan is also available for early adopters. According to Jijo, Voicenotes will soon expand to smartwatches, aiming to provide real-time assistance across platforms. Additionally, the app is evolving to transform voice notes into actionable to-do lists with reminders.
