Alphabet X, known as the “moonshot factory” for its ambitious and diverse technological projects, has launched its latest venture: Tidal. This new company, spun out in mid-July, aims to revolutionize the salmon farming industry by utilizing advanced AI and computer vision technology. Tidal’s mission is part of a broader goal to “feed humanity sustainably,” a lofty ambition that begins with a focus on salmon aquaculture.
Salmon aquaculture, as highlighted by the World Wildlife Foundation, is the fastest-growing food production system globally, accounting for 70% of the market with 2.5 million metric tons produced annually. This makes it a critical area for innovation, particularly in terms of sustainability and efficiency.
Tidal’s Technological Approach
Based in Trondheim, Norway, Tidal employs a combination of sensors, robotics, data science, and AI to provide fish farmers with comprehensive insights into their operations. The technology monitors fish populations, estimates yields, and detects potential issues like sea lice before they cause significant harm. This proactive approach aims to optimize farming practices and reduce environmental and economic costs, especially those associated with feed, which is the largest expense in the industry.
Tidal has already implemented 230 systems across Norway and has conducted operations in Chile and Brazil, working directly with local farmers to refine and deploy its technology. The goal is to help farmers make more sustainable decisions, ultimately benefiting both the environment and the industry’s bottom line.
Transition to Independence
Tidal’s spinout from Alphabet X was a planned move, according to the company. As Alphabet has begun to tighten its focus on profitability and scale back some of its more experimental projects, Tidal has transitioned to an independent company. Alphabet remains a minority owner, but Tidal is now seeking external funding to support its growth. Perry Creek Capital led its latest funding round, with additional backing from Ichthus Venture Capital and Futurum Ventures, although the exact financial details have not been disclosed.
Tidal is currently in what it describes as “full growth mode,” with plans to significantly expand its operations over the next few years. The company aims to double or even triple the number of systems it has deployed, further cementing its role in the salmon farming industry and contributing to more sustainable food production practices.
As Tidal moves forward, it continues to embody the innovative spirit of Alphabet X, applying cutting-edge technology to solve complex global challenges. The success of this spinout could pave the way for similar ventures in other sectors of food production, aligning with broader efforts to create a more sustainable future.
