Spotify has expanded its AI DJ feature by adding a Spanish-speaking option named “Livi.” This marks the first time the feature is available in a language other than English. The launch of Livi follows earlier reports from MyAIGuideBook about the development of AI DJs.
Spotify’s AI DJ feature, initially launched last year, serves as a smart audio guide that introduces personalized song selections with a realistic voice. The original AI DJ, known as “X,” was based on Spotify employee Xavier “X” Jernigan. The feature aims to enhance the music listening experience and increase music consumption on the app. According to Spotify’s internal data, users of the AI DJ feature listen to a significantly larger amount of music, with usage growing over 200% in the past year.
Spotify built the AI DJ using technologies from OpenAI and Sonantic, an AI voice platform it acquired in 2022. They modeled DJ X’s voice using his slang terms and expressions, creating a highly realistic audio experience for users.
Introducing ‘Livi’
After an extensive casting process, Spotify chose Olivia “Livi” Quiroz Roa, a senior music editor based in Mexico City, to be the voice of the new Spanish-speaking AI DJ. Spotify found that her voice resonated the most with listeners, who described it as relatable and similar to receiving music recommendations from a friend.
Spotify’s announcement highlighted the significant demand for a Spanish-speaking AI DJ, with a 215% increase in social media conversations around the feature in Spanish over the past few months. The new AI DJ “Livi” will be available to Premium subscribers in markets where DJ X is already offered, as well as in several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Beta Testing and Usage
For now, Livi is considered a beta test. To access the feature, Spotify Premium subscribers can go to the Search tab on the app, search for “DJ,” and press play. To switch languages from an existing DJ, users need to tap the three-dot menu within the DJ card and select either English or Spanish.
